I have an opportunity. What can Oppo tell me about pharma sales?

Kinja'd!!!

I've been in my current industry for a decade and killed myself to go from peasant to VP. I'm being preseted an opportunity with a base 20% higher than my current salary plus quarterly bonus . I'm struggling with whether I want to start over from a career perspective, throwing away my decade of knowledge and experience. The struggle is real.

This is unusual.. Unless you’re a very attractive female. Because that’s what 99% of Pharmaceutical Sales Reps are.

I would advise against it. It's an absolutely brutal industry with tons of turnover and all kinds of red tape. My dad has done it for 25 years and I've watched it wear him down.

Cant speak for pharma sales but as a pharmacist: I usually hate every single drug rep I see, they are often only good for free meals and being the subject of terrible jokes. Most completely lack even the slightest knowledge into the drugs they are trying to sell. Not saying they are all bad but a lot of the reps I know were kids who couldn’t make it in the pharmacy program.

yes... it’s frustrating, (unless you happen to be a young, blond, female,) but true...

a few things:

1) do you have any scientific/medical or any clinical background/experience?

in today’s highly regulated pharma sales world, a representative has to provide a high depth of knowledge and understanding, not only of their own drugs, but of the diseases they treat, the competitive medications, and the practice needs of their called on prescribers.

gone are the days that some face time, a thanksgiving turkey, and/or a tight dress will influence prescriptions... and those numbers are what your bonus will be based on.

2) pharmaceutical companies are massive organizations with way too many tiers of management. companies are consistently bought/sold and reorganized.

sales reps typically take the brunt of these reorgs, and its almost always last-in first out.

3) will you be calling on actual prescribers? or maybe at an administrative or payer level. if prescribers, do a little research as to the numbers of physicians who are actually still seeing sales reps.

if you’ll be calling on payers or hospitals or other management level administration, its a lot of health economics. not as close to the clinical benefit, and potentially more boring, but also, more likely to influence BIG change.

4) how do you feel about the drug(s) you would be selling? is it a good drug? is it in any way interesting/novel/breakthrough/life changing? or is just another “me-too” drug from a second-tier pharma company?

5) cafepharma.com

go to the company boards.

read as much as you can.
